Have a Moment for the Goddess; Remembering Female Singer, Selena Quintanilla

I love Selena. I think she is what is missing from music today. She was an awesome performer. She could sing and dance, and when you see visuals of her performances you are looking at someone who could have kept up that pace well into her elder years, but she was tragically murdered on March 31, 1995.

She was known as “The Queen of Tejano Music” and “The Tejano Madonna” and was a multi-talented performer that reached a lot of goals in her short span of life. She died at the age of 23 and at the time of her death she was one of the top selling female artists. She was well respected and beloved especially in the Latin American community, and the Mexican American community.

She is much loved in Texas which was her birth state; she was born in Lake Jackson, Texas, which is not too far from Houston. She was an incredible singer and song writer and her music touched the hearts of many people. Her birthday, April 16 was named “Selena Day” in the state of Texas by George W. Bush when he was Governor of Texas. Her beautiful soprano singing can be heard on one of her biggest songs:

Selena had an influential personal sense of style which led her to open a few clothing stores which she let Yolanda Saldívar manage. She also managed Selena’s Fan Club and claimed to be one of her biggest fans. According to witnesses Saldívar became obsessed with Selena. It was also alleged that an enraged Saldívar killed Selena when confronted, and asked to provide financial paperwork that proved her continued embezzlement and betrayal of Selena. Although she received a life sentence for murdering Selena, Yolanda Saldívar is up for parole in 2025. That does not seem fair to me because Selena does not get to see her future. Yolanda decided to take her from the world for whatever selfish reason she had. I think she should not get out this soon, what is your opinion on the matter?

Here is a video describing the circumstances of her murder:

The death of Selena Quintanilla was felt worldwide. Her death was reported in many news outlets and The New York Times made her death their headlines for two days because it was just that important of a story. Her commemorative issue in People magazine is a collector’s item and it was even reprinted in Spanish. Have you ever seen any of the magazines dedicated to Selena?

The Selena Museum

Located in Corpus Christi, Texas is a museum dedicated to Selena Quintanilla. The museum was opened by her family in 1998 in an effort to share their collection of memorabilia with her fans and it is quite the tourist attraction it even has Selena’s red Porsche as an item on display.

Another Tejano singer you may heard of and hopefully you like is Emilio Navaira. Known as the “Garth Brooks of Tejano” and has his own style of country music. Check out one of his songs:
